Mother’s Day is a big thing in Ecuador. It is celebrated on 8th May each year. This year I went to a concert in the “Casa de Cultural Ecuatoriana” in Quito. The concert was on Friday 6th May in the evening. Initially I thought the concert would last two hours or maybe a little more. We arrived one hour early to get good seats. The concert actually lasted for more than four hours and we left at midnight with one more act to go. What was really nice was to see so many older ladies (mothers) accompanied by their children, in particular the daughters.
- Geraldo Moran
- Paulina Tamayo
- Carlos Michelena
- Jayac
- Trio Colonial
The concert consisted of four musical acts and one famous comedian. The star attraction was “Paulina Tamayo”, but my favourite was the group “Jayac” who played traditional music of the Andes.
Having been introduced to the music of the Andes many years ago, and the group “Las Kjarkas” from Bolivia more recently, it was a real treat to see “Jayac” in person. They are the most famous Ecuadorian group playing traditional Andian style music and instruments. I loved hearing them play “Zapatenando Juyayay” and have added this song to those I need to learn well for my karaoke repertoire.
