Sanjuanito (also spelled San Juanito) is a musical genre that originated in Imbabura Province and spread throughout the Andes. It is pre-Inca in origin and existed before the Spanish Conquest. It began to become popular in the early 20th century and has influenced other musical genres including the Ecuadorian pasillo.
This is an example of a traditional Sanjuanito song called “Ponchito” performed by the group Alborada.
